TRIATLAS – TAPIOCA – CANEMS – UFPE Summer School and Workshop on the functioning of Tropical and South Atlantic marine ecosystems – from physics to top predators and fisheries

Dates: September 25 – October 1, 2022

Location: Tamandaré, Brazil

Format: In-person*. A combination of lectures, hands-on work, and presentations.

The Cross Atlantic Network or Excellence in Marine Sciences (CANEMS) is organizing a summer school at the CEPENE  / ICMBio Marine Research Centre in Tamandaré, Brazil,  from September 25 to October 1, 2022. The summer school is organized by the host university, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE) in Recife, Brazil, and by the TRIATLAS and TAPIOCA Projects.

The summer school will consist of lectures outlining the “from physics to top predators and fisheries” approach in the three key regions of the Atlantic Ocean, i.e., (i) eastern boundary current upwelling systems (Benguela and Canary Current systems), (ii) western boundary current systems (North Brazil Current, North-eastern Brazil and Southern Brazil/Malvinas confluence), and (iii) the broader tropical Atlantic Ocean and South Atlantic subtropical gyre. Exercises and group work will stimulate interdisciplinary exchanges among students and lecturers. The summer school will conclude with group presentations and discussions to identify commonalities and differences in the three key regions. Students will also have an opportunity to learn about local ecosystems in Tamandaré through two half-day field trips.

Topics addressed will include inter alia size spectra and mesopelagic ecosystem functioning, seabirds as indicators of climate change, marine ecosystem modelling, and the role of freshwater runoff and shelf eddies and meanders on biological productivity, diversity and fisheries. Examples from the TRIATLAS case study areas will be used as the backdrop.

Outcomes: Multidisciplinary research activities and collaboration that will begin during the summer school and workshop are envisaged to be continued after the workshop. To help foster this long-lasting, mutually beneficial outcome, we encourage participants to collaboratively prepare a peer-reviewed publication synthesizing the challenges and priorities in ecosystem research in the Atlantic Ocean.

Expectations from the summers school and workshop attendees:

  • Send a one-page profile to be placed on the summer school webpage (picture + self-introduction and scientific background – no more than 500 words) by July 31.
  • Bring a poster showing a recent work, what research topics you are interested in, what you plan to study, etc. The size of your poster should NOT be larger than A1 (59.4 X 84.1 cm). It can be any size between B2 and A1.
  • You must arrive at the Tamandaré campus by Sunday (September 25) evening, before 7 pm. Transportation by bus from Recife to the ICMBio campus will be provided. Participation in the ice-breaker is mandatory.

All of the selected Early Career Researchers (ERC) have received logistics information, in addition to the above.
