Call for applications: 2020 NF-POGO Shipboard Training onboard the Gulf of Guinea cruise
The Nippon Foundation (NF) and the Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO) are pleased to announce that the 2020 Shipboard Training onboard the Gulf of Guinea cruise is now open for applications.
As part of the POGO-supported project Acquisition of Oceanographic Data for Sustainable Resources Management in the Gulf of Guinea, two cruises will sample diverse parameters such as salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll a, pH, current speed and direction, nutrients, bottom sediment and meteorological data in an offshore transect from Lagos into the Gulf of Guinea with ten (10) stations.
The selected candidates will have the opportunity to
-
- visit the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR) for one month prior to the start of the cruise to participate in cruise preparation and planning;
- support the sampling activities during one of the 6-day cruises (first one in December 2020);
- and after the cruise to spend approximately one additional month at NIOMR, learning to analyse the results statistically and interpret them.
Ten fellowships are available for early career scientists, technicians, postgraduate students (PhD or MSc) and Post-doctoral Fellows involved in oceanographic work in Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria and Togo. Two fellowships will be granted for each of these countries.
Deadline for applications: Saturday 31st October 2020, 23:59 (GMT).
