SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAMME
The creation of the Master in Applied Economics in 2014 focused on the study of coastal and marine regions in order to contribute to the development of these regions in a sustainable manner, with a particular emphasis on the socio-economic-political-environmental development of the extreme southern region of Rio Grande, from the constitution of a scientific support of excellence to the formulation of public policies at the service of coastal and marine areas.
The implementation of the Master’s programme also aims to contribute to the training of human capital in the field of economics, with a focus on economics applied to coastal and marine areas not only in the extreme south of Rio Grande, but also in Brazil.
The research lines of the programme include the following themes:

- Economics of coastal and marine areas. This line of research studies the economics of pollution, the economics of natural resources, environmental assessment methods, focusing on the coastal and marine environment. Topics such as: the economics of climate change, public policies for the sea, use and conservation of biodiversity, economic evaluation of environmental and human impacts, exploitation of natural resources, economic studies of productive sectors (oil, gas, fisheries and tourism) are studied, focusing on the coastal and marine environment.

- Economics of social welfare. This line covers themes which involve problems related to society and which are directly or indirectly associated with issues of economic and social efficiency. The work developed in this line presents discussions on topics such as : (i) security, (ii) poverty, (iii) the labour market, (iv) health, (v) environmental and natural resource economics, and (iv) sustainable regional development.
